Using KCUMA Data

post time 13. September 2009 member robyne

We have implemented the mapping tool for all our partners in KCUMA. http://data.kcuma.org is the mapping site, but you must be a registered user to actually use the tool. Contact Robyne Turner if you are interested and I can give you access.

Partners, including the city are making fledgling uses of the map tool and data. For some it is a learning curve of using data in a new way. For others, there may be a disconnect between planning and implementing corridor development and the map tool value is not readily recognizable. This fall we will launch a series of analysis tutorials with commercial real estate brokers and developers to generate ideas on how to make effective use of KCUMA.

Meanwhile, here is a great resource from the Lincoln Land Institute, Transforming Community Development with Land Information Systems.  Check out the chapter on Cleveland, Ohio - p. 17 in the .pdf doc, “Fostering Neighborhood Market Recovery.” This gives some great ideas on how to turn planning into executing and achieving as well as how to think about the information/data you need to achieve your goals. Much of what is outlined here can be done with KCUMA data and with the help of the KCUMA team.  Our mission this year is to provide strategic guidance and data analysis that will enable our partners to achieve their development goals.

The KCUMA team is expanding into Camden, NJ and is having serious talks with corridor partners here about creating a drilldown type database and to encourage commercial redevelopment in a city that desperately needs it! I encourage our Kansas City partners to post comments here about their experiences with KCUMA and how they are using the data base and plan to.  It would be helpful to the KCUMA team and provide some insight for the folks here in Camden.

The New KCUMA map tool launches!

post time 15. April 2009 member robyne

After the initial rollout and testing of the KCUMA map tool site, our partners took it for a test drive. Based on your feedback, the new applications and upgrades are up and the final format is officially ready!

www.data.kcuma.org

To get you started, you will need to login with your user name and password. We have reset everyone to a new default which is:

Username: first initial and last name

Password: kansascity

Here is a convenient tutorial that will walk you through the steps for login, password change, and updating your profile:

Intro Tutorial

Here is another tutorial to give you pointers on how to do a basic search, use the map tool, and generate reports. A great feature is that when you have set your map pins as you want them and then need to change your data request, you simply move a pin out and then back to generate the new data. No more having to hit “search” again and resetting the pins!

Basic Search, Map, and Data Report

Very soon we will add more tutorials, upload documents, and get all our partners set up for video and document sharing.

Urbata will revolutionize the way Community Economic Development is done and how you approach your project development. We are very excited and proud to have come this far with all our users and partners to share our collective vision on what community building, economic development, and the urban future can be.

Welcome to Community Development 2.0!

KC successfully challenges U.S. Census using KCUMA data

post time 6. February 2009 member robyne

The city of Kansas City announced today that the U.S. Bureau of the Census approved the city’s challenge of the latest Census estimate. The city now adds 25,455 people to the official population count. The challenge was done with the assistance of project KCUMA staff and used the KCUMA DrillDown data to help make the case.  While the DrillDown results show more people uncovered than the number approved by the Census, we are very pleased that the challenge was successful and that the very conservative Census Bureau accepted the KCUMA DrillDown data as a legitimate source of information.

KCUMA partners are using DrillDown data to support their development projects and neighborhood improvement efforts. They have access to the KCUMA data through the Urbata mapping tool as it continues in the development stage. Final release of  the DrillDown data through the Urbata mapping tool will occur in April 2009.

KCUMA is working on an update of the Kansas City DrillDown that will use current versions of city hall data and other DrillDown data sources.  Other cities in the KC Metro are seeking to undertake the DrillDown despite the economic challenges we are all facing. KCUMA, as the pilot program for Urbata access tool, will go nationwide in 2010 to coincide with the next Census.

City Council likes what they see

post time 10. July 2008 member robyne

We had a fantastic round of presentations at City Council in Kansas City the last week of June. We presented first to the Housing committee and gave a detailed and technical presentation to that group. The next day we presented to the full city council and they were very pleased with what they heard. Click on this link to see the video of our June 26 presentation to the KCMO city council business meeting…

We gave city council the highlights of the DrillDown results and talked about how we could go regional with the process. It is developing into a great opportunity for KCMO to be a leader in economic development information and access to it by neighborhoods, businesses, government agencies, nonprofits, and other interested parties. The powerpoint presentation is already available for you in the far right column of this web page. I think the response from council - jovial, supportive, enthused - indicates that we did a good job and we have a good product. What a thrill to be able to be part of a project that enables the university to bring a great resource to the city and value to the community. We are very appreciative of the City’s willingness to supply their internal data, work with us on getting the data out to users, and giving us access to what will be a wealth of research information. This is a wonderful example of a university-city collaborative partnership.
